Greetings Faculty!

Good news!  Our new website is up. You can find us at ohloneUFO.org.  All thanks and praise go to Isabel Reichert who took time that she did not have to get our site up and running.  It’s beautiful too.  And I was just told that she’s faculty of the month as well!  Well deserved, Isabel. I have also attached a flyer from Project Censored (Nolan, VP) regarding a social justice conference coming up. Please put it on your calendar. In today’s news, Arizona teachers are striking next Thursday.  Although, the governor has pledged to give a 20% raise by 2020, the teachers are so behind from decades of cuts, that the pledge is not enough.  And this Tuesday, Oakland school teachers will be protesting at Lake Merritt Amphitheater from 4-6pm for a fair contract and reducing class sizes and caseloads.  Students, teachers, and families are welcome. For more info, check out, http://www.eastbaydsa.org/. Oakland teachers haven’t had a contract since July 2017. If you miss the event today, don’t worry; I’m sure there will be more to follow. And for Ohlone, it’s important to note that while our pay raises have been better than Oklahoma and West Virginia our local inflation is much higher, which in some ways makes us worse off.

News from Jim:

Personal job security is one of the most important factors one considers when he or she decides to become a professor.  Professors think tenure or perhaps their collective bargaining agreement will protect their rights, Unfortunately, Ohlone’s current contract provides little in the way of protection from an angry student with an axe to grind.   And what is most disturbing is you will not even know there is a problem until the district has decided you are guilty.  This is the current language:

18.4 Complaints Against Faculty

In order to protect faculty from unreasonable complaints or charges, and at the same time grant an administrative channel to ensure due process, the following procedures shall be adhered to:

A. All Complaints should normally be submitted in writing to the President/Superintendent/designee.

B. The President/Superintendent/designee shall conduct a thorough investigation of all the complaints deemed to warrant such action or as the law provides.

C. The faculty member shall be notified by the administrator assigned to the case of the investigation at the point the District finds the claim has merit.

The faculty member has the right to submit to the administrator a written response to the allegations within ten working days of being notified of the investigation.

Job security is among our highest priorities and any contract that does not guarantee due process should be rejected.  If you have ideas for language that would guarantee due process, please share them with Jim.

As many of you know, last year two of our full-time professors were separated from employment.  The UFO Executive Board passed two resolutions in our last meeting condemning the circumstances that resulted in job loss and demanding the reinstatement of both professors.  Your union stands shoulder to shoulder with you.
